Opal is the birthstone for the month of October. It holds special significance symbolizing hope, purity and innocence. While opals are great gifts for October birthdays, they are also wonderful for anyone, any time of year!
This beautiful gemstone comes in a variety of types and from various sources. Opal types include white opal (light), gray opal (dark), black opal, boulder opal, crystal opal, contraluz opal, fire opal, and fossil opal. Australia is known as the primary source for opals particularly renowned for their stability and quality. Other countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Ethiopia, and the United States also yield opals. In 2008, NASA even discovered opal deposits on Mars.
Opals display a unique phenomenon known as "play of color", which refers to the vibrant flashes of different colors that can be seen when the stone is moved or viewed from different angles. The play of color in opals is caused by the diffraction of light as it passes through the microscopic silica spheres that make up the stone's structure. This phenomenon can vary greatly from stone to stone as each opal is unique and may exhibit different patterns, colors, and intensities. Unlike many other gemstones, which have a crystalline structure, opals have an amorphous, non-crystalline structure that is responsible for their unique optical properties.

Opal jewelry is a great way to display these unique gemstones. However, opals are relatively soft, making them more susceptible to scratching and breaking. It is best to wear Opals in earrings and necklaces where they will not be at risk of being exposed to possible impact. Additionally, opals should not be worn in the shower or when swimming. The best way to clean an opal is to use a damp cloth or a gentle soap and soft brush. Never use steam, an ultrasonic machine, or harsh chemicals as this will permanently damage the stone.
